Diarré kan också orsakas av ett flertal andra protozoer t.ex.&#039;&#039; [[Cryptosporidium parvum]]&#039;&#039; och &#039;&#039;[[Cyclospora cayetanensis]]&#039;&#039; samt av [[microsporidia]]. Taxonomin, speciellt för protozoer, är komplex och under ständig omvärdering. Som en vägledning för läsaren presenteras i tabell 22 ett förenklat taxonomiskt schema där även vardagsnamn är insatta.<br /> <br /> Vissa maskar (omnämnda i tabell 23) är också relaterade till tarmsymtom.<br /> <br /> Vid protozoinfektioner orsakade av &#039;&#039;E. histolytica&#039;&#039; och &#039;&#039;G. intestinalis&#039;&#039; dominerar trofozoitformen vid kraftig diarré. Cyststadiet blir vanligare och trofozoiterna försvinner allteftersom avföringen blir fastare (Fig 14). Som rutinmetod för påvisande av cystor och maskägg används formalin/etylacetat-koncentrering. Med denna metod påvisas dock ej trofozoiter.
