Icke-veneriska treponematoser 	&lt;br /&gt;
Endemisk syfilis (bejel, dichuchwa) förekommer vid dags dato framförallt i ökenområden och tempererade områden i Nord- och Central-Afrika men en del foci i Mellersta Östern finns kvar. Yaws (frambesia, pian, buba) förekommer primärt i varma, fuktiga, tropiska områden i sub-Sahara Afrika, Sydamerika, Karibiska övärlden, Sydost Asien samt på vissa Stilla havsöar. Pinta (carate, mal de pinto, cute) förekommer framförallt hos ursprungsbefolkning i avlägsna, lantliga tropiska områden i Central- och Sydamerika (1, 2). &lt;br /&gt;
Yaws och endemisk syfilis sprids oftast mellan barn (2-15 år) medan pinta vanligtvis har en sjukdomsdebut senare (15-30 års ålder) (1). Numera beräknas cirka 34 miljoner (nyfödda och barn men även till mindre grad tonåringar och vuxna) riskera att bli infekterade globalt. Alla dessa lever i utvecklingsländer, mestadels i avlägsna områden med låg hygienstandard och avsaknad av effektiv hälsovård (2). Prevalensen av de icke-veneriska treponematoserna är dock osäker på grund av brist på pålitlig rapportering och övervakning men WHO estimerade 1998 att det var 2,6 miljoner fall (infektiösa, latenta och gamla) globalt och 460 000 nya fall, av vilka 400 000 var i Afrika, per år (3). Sjukdomarna var tidigare vanliga, exempelvis i början av 1950-talet estimerades att 200 miljoner individer exponerades enbart för yaws under sina livstider (4). WHO inledde dock 1948 ett program för utrotning av de icke-veneriska treponematoserna i sina endemiska områden. Förekomsten av alla dessa infektioner minskade betydligt under 1900-talets senare del, men åtminstone yaws tycks nu åter öka i de endemiska områdena (5, 6). &lt;br /&gt;
